The Chronology of our History

The G.S.A. - Lefkada Regional Departement of the General State Archives, is the service responsible by law for the labeling, inventory, preservation and rescue of all documents and other documents of the public, as well as private archives and collections of the prefecture.

Venetian period

Established by the Venetians

The Archives of Lefkada -Original name of the Archives of the Prefecture of Lefkada-, was created by the Venetians at the same time and in parallel with the other services, to receive their archives at regular intervals for safekeeping (it is known that the Venetians had a very well organized administration, which kept the archives her with class).

1715

Fire and Archive Destruction

On July 1715 the Venetians, leaving Lefkada, under the pressure of the Turks, blew up the ramparts and other facilities of the fortress of Agia Mavra, where the Archive was housed. The fire that followed incinerated the Archive from which "not a single piece of paper" remained, according to a certificate from the then archivist, a certificate that seems excessive, because - even a few - documents from the period 1684-1715 are preserved.

1864 - 1991

Transfer to the Greek state and renaming

In 1864, Lefkada was united with Greece, where the Archive was transferred to the Administration of the Greek State, where it was renamed the Historical Archive of Lefkada and later, in 1991, to Archives of the Prefecture of Lefkada.
